The Program

Foundations

There’s artistry in the works.

Your pathway to mastery begins alongside other freshmen art and design majors as you collectively participate in The Foundations Program, an intensive first-year program that is unique to the South Carolina School of the Arts. Working in small groups led by teams of faculty from the drawing, painting, ceramics and design disciplines, students learn to seek out innovative solutions to challenging problems.

Here, you’ll explore traditional tools, materials and techniques; study and use principles of design; and discover how to form conceptual ideas and images. Hands-on studio experiences allow you to develop your own unique creative processes at the same time you learn to manage complex projects.

As your confidence and capabilities improve, your best work becomes even better.

Programs of Study

Here’s where your skills, talent, imagination, and determination really begin to come together. With guidance from faculty mentors, you’ll immerse yourself in the specific methods and media of your chosen field, experimenting with techniques and treatments, practicing purposeful design and flawless execution, and developing a critical eye for evaluation. Sure, it’s a tough, messy, time-consuming experience.

But what it reveals will prepare you to work wonders.

Once you’ve completed your Foundations overview, you’ll be challenged to go beyond the basics by focusing your studies in one of five specialized programs of study:
